As I come to the end of my mayoral year I would like to add my personal thank you
for the opportunity to send this message of goodwill to the Ahmadiyya Muslim
Association UK and wish them a successful walk for peace event on 19 June 2011.
I would like to recognize the commitment of the Ahmadiyya organisation and
acknowledge the members and families of all those involved in the work of the
community based here in the United Kingdom.
Wishing you and everyone who attends the celebrations a great day.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association has had a long history in
organising these walks, which were initiated by the then head of the
movement, Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad. The first walk was held on 18th
May 1985 in Tilford. Initially the walks were restricted to the surrounding
or the site in Tilford, Surrey. Later new locations were explored and the
Walks were held in the Yorkshire Dales, the Bournemouth seaside,
Bradford, Hartlepool, Gillingham, Morden and Croydon. During the early
years the amounts raised for charity were only a few hundred pounds with
Imperial Cancer Research Fund being the main beneficiary.

considerably strengthened as targets were set and other charities were
included as beneficiaries...
